A RECOLLECTION
You’re looking at a photograph of an empty shed standing at the T-intersection of 140th Street --- a county road, paved these days --- and Highway 67, also known as the Great River Road. This intersection is known as Almont, and is part of Elk River Township, in Iowa. The Mississippi River flows a mile or two behind this building. My father grew up on a farm located a couple of miles south of here. My mother grew up on a farm a few miles west of here. They had their first date at a dance-hall-turned-roller-rink once located in the corn field across the road from this building. My father’s parents dropped by there every Thursday night, when it was still a dance hall. I spent a few years of my childhood on a farm located several miles upriver, near Green Island. So this is my home page.
